IRS Letter LTR4674C Identity Theft Post-Adjustment Victim Notification Letter: What Are The Facts?

Jamie Williams

What Is The Purpose Of This Letter?

You received this letter because someone attempted to file a tax return on your behalf without your consent.

As a rule, the IRS will place an identity theft indicator on your tax file. This means the next time you file, you will need to provide an identity protection ID number, called a IP PIN1, as a way to protect against this happening again.

The letter will indicate, what action you need to take:
  • If your return was rejected due to the identity theft, you must mail in your tax return to the address indicated in the letter
  • If you don't need to file a return, no further action is needed
If you suspect identity theft with other financial records besides your tax records, the IRS provides suggestions that you:
    1. Contact your financial institution
    2. Contact the fraud department of the three major credits bureaus
    3. Contact your local state tax agency for additional steps
    4. Check your credit period annually at www.annualcreditreport.com
    5. File a complaint with the FTC online at www.identitytheft.gov
    6. File a police report with your local police department

What can you do now? Continue reading this blog to learn more about what you can do right now if you received this letter and how to avoid unexpected letters from the IRS in the future and the associated worries and concerns they can cause.
